Hameeda Khan
Founder and CEO

As Founder and CEO of PEP (People Empowering People), I have dedicated over 15 years to empowering historically excluded communities through impactful initiatives. My mission is to create equitable opportunities for underrepresented groups, shaped by my lived experiences and commitment to justice. I have led numerous projects that identify gaps in services and develop bespoke workshops, ensuring GEM communities are consulted and actively involved in shaping our work.

Under my leadership, PEP has developed a robust strategy in collaboration with GEM leaders and professionals, driving our ambitious vision forward. We are excited to launch “Our Voice,” the first-ever radio show in the Valley dedicated to celebrating and amplifying local stories, sounds and culture within the GEM community, ensuring their contributions are recognised and valued. Additionally, we are developing strong digital spaces to engage our communities, leveraging social media and interactive content to encourage connection and representation.

I also bring my lived experience and insights to strategic tables, influencing policy and direction as a Non-Executive Director for WWL NHS Trust and a member of the EDI board for Lancashire Football Association. Throughout my journey, I have prioritised training and development within PEP, completing a degree in leadership and management, a mini-MBA in strategic leadership, and now pursuing a Master’s degree. My work is driven by a deep belief in creating lasting change for GEM communities, ensuring their voices are heard and their contributions valued.

Dr Nabila Alam
Chair and Director

I am a medical researcher at the University of Westminster, specialising in developing therapies for osteoarthritis. Since joining the university in 2019, I have had the privilege of publishing papers and presenting our research across Europe and Canada. I am passionate about my role and the impact it has on advancing medical science.

In addition to my research, I run a successful tuition group where I teach English, Maths, and Science to students ranging from primary school to GCSE. More recently, I’ve expanded into teaching history, religious studies, and A-level chemistry. Teaching students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and academic levels brings me immense fulfilment. The challenges are demanding but deeply rewarding, as I witness both my students and myself grow through perseverance and success.

Born and bred in Lancashire, I am especially drawn to the mission of PEP, which aims to enhance educational prospects, employment opportunities, welfare, and overall well-being in underserved communities. This kind of work is often undervalued, particularly in areas where there is limited understanding of the obstacles these communities face. As someone who has seen these challenges firsthand, I am committed to bringing my lived experience to address both health inequalities and barriers in education. It is critical that we create opportunities that empower individuals with the confidence to reach their full potential, ensuring no one is left behind.

Uzma Shaheen
Director

My name is Uzma Shaheen, and I’m proud to serve as a director on PEP’s board. Born in Pakistan and now a UK resident, I represent the strength and resilience of the GEM community. As a mother whose first language isn’t English, I’ve experienced the challenges of integrating into a new society, which fuels my passion for supporting others on similar journeys.

I look forward to continuing my journey with PEP, contributing to and benefiting from the important work we do to empower and uplift our communities.

Zohaib Sadiq
Project Co-ordinator

My interest in this work began during my studies at the University of Manchester, where I completed my undergraduate degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. During my studies, I found myself drawn to the Global Ethnic Majority space, specifically around representation within
academic and society at large.

As a student and more recently as a working professional, my experiences across property, financial services and journalism has consistently shown me the lack of meaningful and inclsuive representation and inclusive leadership for the GEM community. My lived experience, deepening interest and project experience naturally led to me to PEP Enterprise as a Project Coordinator .Today, as a Project Coordinator, I work for an incredible organisation to break down barriers and create
meaningful opportunities.

Ammaar Mahmood
Digital Marketing Apprentice

My journey with PEP began as a volunteer, where I immersed myself in social media engagement. From the very start, I was captivated by PEP’s unwavering dedication to empowerment and community support, and I knew I wanted to be part of something so impactful. Growing up, I saw and experienced the lack of representation of Global Ethnic Majority (GEM) individuals in all aspects of life, which fuelled my desire to contribute.

In April 2024, I officially joined the team as a digital marketer, a role that has allowed me to channel my passion into meaningful work. As part of my Multi-Channel Marketer Level 3 Training Apprenticeship, I manage PEP’s social media strategy, craft engaging content, and constantly explore creative approaches to connect with our audience. I’m deeply committed to using these skills to make a lasting impact within my community.

Dr Chinyere Ajayi
Advisory Group Member
Course & Social Justice Lead UCLan

I am a qualified youth and community worker with over 16 years of experience in community development. As the Course Leader for the BA Youth Work and Community Practice programme at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and Social Justice Theme Lead for the Global Race Centre for Equality (GRACE), I focus on empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds and addressing systemic inequalities. My research centres on domestic and gender-based violence, migration, and the lived experiences of minoritised women, with projects funded by organisations such as The British Academy and NIHR.

Beyond academia, I actively support my community as a Co-director of the Life Enrichment Programme, providing resources and activities for vulnerable individuals, a Trustee for SLEAP, assisting young people in need, and a Core Group Member of Preston City of Sanctuary, creating inclusivity for those seeking refuge.

Joining PEP’s Advisory Group offers an opportunity to combine my lived experience, professional expertise, and passion for race equity to support GEM communities. I am committed to contributing to PEP’s mission of equitable leadership and representation and believe my background can help create meaningful change.

Amberine Nawaz
Advisory Group Member
Female Entrepreneur

I’m Amberine, a single mother, educator, and legal advisor turned entrepreneur with a passion for creating safe spaces and opportunities for women. My journey led me to launch Pink Ladies, a successful taxi firm in Yorkshire, dedicated to providing safe and reliable travel for women.

What began as a local service has grown into a movement, and I’m now expanding with a Community Interest Company (CIC) in Bradford, aimed at supporting GEM women in their daily commutes. With plans to extend our services to Sheffield and Leicester, I’m committed to making safe travel accessible to more women across the region.

I’ve joined PEP’s Advisory Group to bring my entrepreneurial experience and deep understanding of the barriers faced by GEM communities. My goal is to contribute to PEP’s mission of creating equitable opportunities and driving representation. Together, I believe we can empower more women to lead, thrive, and create meaningful change.

Shaheen Mogradia
Advisory Group Member

I am an experienced librarian with over 15 years of employment across a number of different roles within a dual library and museum service.

As a young volunteer I received an award at Downing Street for my work in reader development in children and young people and am since qualified with a BA in English Literature and certified in Leading Libraries through the Birmingham Leadership Institute.

As well as working in the heart of the community, in both frontline and management roles in a service built on the fundamentals of free and accessible information for all, I have spent a number of years teaching museum educational workshops, delivering tours, events and storytelling; breaking barriers and celebrating culture and community throughout.

I have a particular expertise in actively developing, implementing and teaching Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, creating safe spaces to explore these topics and executing substantial positive change. I have worked on identifying, leading and updating museum educational workshops
as well as other projects working in partnership with organisations such as Libraries of Sanctuary, Manchester Indian Film Festival, Collection HQ and Empathy Lab. I have been a key speaker at various events and conferences, advocating for progress for the Global Ethnic Majority. I
am also a judge for the charity Empathy Lab where I work with practitioners across the country to develop the yearly Read for Empathy booklist for primary school aged children which is used as a toolkit by practitioners to raise an empathy-educated generation.

I have joined PEPs advisory board as I believe in PEPs mission to create meaningful change through people and policy. I am excited by PEPs strategic vision and honoured to bring my knowledge and expertise in breaking barriers through community cohesion, reader development and
empathy.

Ehsan Iqbal
Advisory Group Member

My journey into this work truly began at the University of Manchester, where I earned a First-class degree in History and Politics. During my studies, I was deeply immersed in the history of ethnic minorities and the challenges faced by marginalised communities in the UK. What struck
me most was the stark underrepresentation of students from my background on my course and within academia. This wasn’t just a personal experience; it highlighted a much larger issue, how poorly GEM communities are represented in society at large. Research backs this up. A report by the Royal Historical Society (RHS) reveals that many GEM students often feel disconnected from history because it doesn’t reflect their experiences. This disconnect contributes to lower engagement and uptake in subjects that should be
inclusive. I was determined to change this narrative, encouraging more students to pursue subjects like history and to enter academia, not just to learn about the past, but to take ownership of their own stories and reshape the future.
This passion led me to PEP Enterprise, where I joined as a Trainee Community Development Officer in January 2022. Seeing the exclusion of GEM communities firsthand, I knew more had to be done to ensure their stories were told, and their leadership nurtured. Today, as an Advisory
Group Member, I work with PEP to break down barriers and uplift these communities. My goal remains the same, to ensure those who have been marginalised are not just heard but are actively shaping our future.

Inzinga Samms-Alcott
Advisory Group Member

Inzinga is a passionate researcher, facilitator, and consultant
dedicated to anti-racist, de-colonial, and feminist practice. She is currently completing her legal training and is set to qualify in 2029. A 2025 Warwick Business School graduate and proud recipient of the 2024/25 Future Leaders Magazine Top 150 Future Leader Award, she brings a wealth of insight and dedication to inclusive leadership.

Alongside her legal training, Inzinga has collaborated with leading organisations including Southern Voices Manchester, Nurturing Foundations, and SupplyESChange, and has previously held roles with AIESEC UK, AIESEC in Spain, ThinkHigher, and 180 Degrees Consulting.

Inspired by the vision of PEP Enterprise’s founder, Hameeda Khan, and her experience working alongside her in CARISMA Services’ Leadership Development Programme, Inzinga joins our Advisory Group to amplify underrepresented voices and champion the use of lived experience to drive inclusive and sustainable community change.

Zaynab Jogi
Advisory Group Member

My journey has been shaped by a commitment to empowering women from all backgrounds and creating opportunities through sport, education, and community support. Growing up and working within diverse communities, I’ve seen first-hand the barriers many women and young people face in accessing physical activity, leadership pathways, and culturally appropriate support. These experiences have driven me for the last 17 years to focus my work on advocacy, inclusion, mental-health awareness, and uplifting individuals who are often overlooked.

I have led and supported a wide range of community initiatives centred on empowerment, wellbeing, and physical activity. As the only female self-defence instructor in the North West delivering four disciplines boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and self-defence  I have used sport as a tool to build confidence and safety for women and girls. I founded Z’s Defence Academy, a charity created to educate, engage, and empower women through accessible training and community support.

I have worked closely with women, families, and young people from minority backgrounds, offering culturally sensitive guidance and practical routes into development. My work has involved collaboration with community organisations, Lancashire Constabulary, universities, and grassroots groups to ensure projects are inclusive, safe, and shaped by lived experience. I am also the only British Muslim woman in the UK to achieve two Guinness World Records on Kilimanjaro, a milestone I use to inspire other women to challenge limitations and believe in their own potential.

My achievements reflect my passion for building spaces where people feel seen, valued, and supported from mentoring underrepresented individuals to advocating for access, leadership, and wellbeing in overlooked communities.

I want to join the PEP Advisory Group because its mission of representation, equity, and meaningful change aligns directly with my journey and values. I hope to bring my lived experience, community insight, and commitment to empowering women to help support PEP’s ongoing work and strategic direction.

Warren Davey
Advisory Group Member

I’ve spent my career building brands, driving integrated marketing, and leading teams to success. My journey has taken me from senior roles at McCann Worldgroup in the UK to leading marketing for large corporations like npower, and fast-growth FinTech companies such as MoneySuperMarket.com.

My passion lies in bringing people and organisations together, creating a strategic, customer-focused approach that drives growth. I firmly believe that when we rally around a shared vision, we can build an integrated and commercially effective culture. Along the way, I’ve held several board director roles and founded a full-service marketing agency, helping high-growth businesses transform and scale rapidly. My MBA and diverse leadership experience have provided me with a well-rounded, inclusive perspective that I bring to every endeavour.

I joined PEP as a board advisor because I’m deeply committed to social integration and creating an equitable world where everyone’s contributions are recognised and valued. I’m also excited by PEP’s ambition to harness digital and social spaces to amplify their mission—an area where I can bring significant value through my expertise in integrated marketing and digital transformation.

Ahmad Feroz Ahmadi
Volunteer

I served as a Liaison Officer for the British Forces in Afghanistan starting in 2016 and later worked in a special ministerial role with the Ministry of Defence. When Afghanistan fell in 2021, I had to make the difficult decision to leave my home and relocate to the UK. In August that year, I settled in Rossendale, where I began to rebuild my life.

By October 2021, I connected with PEP and started receiving support, which was a turning point for me. In July 2022, I became a volunteer at PEP, sharing my knowledge and experience to help others, while also embracing new skills and learning about different cultures. Volunteering has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me—it’s made me feel more integrated, boosted my confidence, expanded my social network, and improved my job skills.

I always encourage others, especially newcomers, to volunteer at PEP. It’s a fantastic way to give back and feel part of something bigger. Through my involvement, I secured a degree sponsorship at the University of Bolton and a full-time job as a case worker supporting other refugees in Lancaster. But PEP is more than just a stepping stone for me—it’s like family, and I remain deeply committed to its mission and continue to offer my voluntary support.

John
Volunteer

It’s wonderful to volunteer at PEP and help support a variety of refugees and asylum seekers develop, practice and engage with the English language.

With my background in education, it’s now great to be able to dispense with formal methods and create a relaxed and welcoming environment so people can feel confident to use their mother tongue along side practising English; make mistakes and correct them to gain confidence to enable them to live more positively in our area.  I’d encourage anyone, from any background, who likes to chat and meet interesting people to give up some time and volunteer with the group.  Translation apps can be a lifeline each week! It’s always good to know the people who have used the drop in service have gone on to more formal lessons at College and are moving their lives forward here in the UK.

Sabina
Volunteer

I have volunteered with PEP for 1 year to get experience and develop my English speaking skills.

I love to meet new people,  socialise, and help others.

In the end, I hope to gain enough
experience to get a job.

Sanah
Volunteer
Law Student and Advocate for GEM Representation

As a law degree student, I am passionate about creating equitable opportunities for underrepresented communities. Volunteering at PEP allows me to support initiatives focused on leadership and representation while applying the critical and analytical skills I’ve gained through my studies.

Being a young woman from a Global Ethnic Majority background, I understand firsthand the importance of having diverse voices at the table. For me, GEM representation is about more than visibility—it’s about ensuring fairness, equity, and progress in all areas of society. My work with PEP gives me the chance to contribute to meaningful projects that amplify these values and drive real change.

This experience is not only helping me to give back to my community but is also preparing me for my future career in law. It’s equipping me with essential skills in advocacy, collaboration, and leadership—qualities I aim to use to make a positive impact both inside and outside the legal profession. I’m proud to be part of a mission that aligns so closely with my values and aspirations.

Hanzlah
Volunteer
IT Student and Digital Campaign Enthusiast

As an IT student, I’m excited to bring my skills and passion for technology to PEP, supporting their social and digital campaigns. Joining the team allows me to contribute to impactful projects while gaining valuable hands-on experience in a professional setting.

Being a young person from a Global Ethnic Majority background, I understand the power of digital platforms to amplify voices and tell stories that matter. For me, supporting PEP’s mission is an opportunity to help raise awareness about GEM representation while also honing my technical and creative abilities.

This experience is giving me the chance to develop new skills, collaborate with a diverse team, and apply what I’ve learned in my studies to real-world initiatives. I’m proud to be part of a mission that not only supports my growth but also aligns with my belief in the importance of equity and representation in all spaces.

Ahmad
Digital Volunteer - Salford University

I believe there is something powerful about telling hard stories, and this is why I chose to volunteer at PEP.

As a Nigerian and member of the Global Ethnic Majority (GEM) with an academic and professional background in digital and traditional communications, I want to bring these experiences and qualifications together in a way that supports and enables other GEM communities.

Experiences in my country have taught me that sometimes, people need others to speak up for them, to spread stories that keep faith alive, even when things appear bleak. I chose to be that person.
