Our Journey

The Beginnings
PEP (People Empowering People) began with a shared mission to break down barriers and empower Global Ethnic Majority (GEM) communities. Its founder, Hameeda Khan, drew on her personal experiences to shape this vision. Growing up as a second-generation British Pakistani, Hameeda witnessed first-hand the challenges faced by her community. Her passion for advocacy grew from a desire to create change for others.
In 2010, Hameeda saw the struggles of women in her new community of Rossendale—mothers like her seeking connection and opportunities. She reached out to over 45 women, sharing her vision of empowerment, and soon secured funding with the help of a local community centre eager to engage with GEM women. This marked the start of Holistic Inspirations. Initially centred around simple coffee mornings, the project quickly evolved into a vibrant space where women from diverse backgrounds came together to share skills, stories, and experiences. Many left feeling empowered, with a renewed sense of direction and belonging.
The Early Years
Listening closely to the needs of these women, Hameeda led the development of bespoke and tailored courses, bridging the gaps the community had identified. They introduced wellness classes such as yoga and aerobics, alongside personal development programmes focused on building confidence and resilience. The success of these initiatives sparked partnerships and collaborations with local health bodies and community organisations, broadening their reach and impact.
Throughout these years, a strong network of volunteers emerged from within the community, and over time, these dedicated individuals played a key role in shaping and delivering the work. Under Hameeda’s leadership, many women began pursuing accredited courses, further education, and employment opportunities, with several becoming leaders in their own right.
As the project grew, Hameeda was invited to expand her work to other areas like Hyndburn. New collaborations were formed with local councils, businesses, leisure centres, and organisations such as the NHS, Lancashire Police, and the DWP. What started as a focus on empowering women soon evolved into wider support for refugees, young people, the elderly, and individuals facing mental health challenges, all while continuing to offer vital educational and employment support.
PEP - The Future
In 2019, PEP was born to consolidate a decade of grassroots work into a more strategic initiative. Hameeda recognised that while the projects had been impactful, there was a need to challenge the systemic barriers preventing people from reaching their full potential. She brought together a diverse team of professionals with lived experience to drive PEP’s mission forward. Today, the organisation is proudly run by professionals who reflect the GEM communities they serve, with nearly all of the board and staff coming from these backgrounds.
PEP’s mission is clear: to advocate for GEM communities through lived experience, raise awareness, and push for equitable leadership and representation. They collaborate with organisations to challenge the systems that perpetuate inequality, creating pathways for lasting change.
From its early work in women’s empowerment to its current focus on systemic transformation, PEP’s journey has been one of empowering growth and relentless advocacy. At PEP, they are not just uplifting individuals; they are reshaping the structures that have long kept GEM communities at the margins. Together, they are building a future where every voice is heard, every story is valued, and everyone has a seat at the table.
